Medical Education

Beaumont is one of the premier independent academic medical centers in the United States. Beaumont’s strong commitment to education is the foundation upon which our outstanding patient care, research and educational endeavors are built. Beaumont’s mission of providing the highest quality health care services to all of our patients regardless of where they live or their financial circumstances is supported through our strong educational programs.

With programs spanning across the entire health care continuum, Beaumont offers programs suited to all health care professionals. And because Beaumont is one of the busiest hospital systems in the U.S. (ER visits, admissions, surgeries), students gain a wealth of experience through our programs.

Ophthalmology Residency

Our Ophthalmology Residency provides three years of training following completion of a Transitional Year internship. A progressive, well-coordinated educational experience is accomplished through a combination of outpatient, inpatient, emergency and surgical experiences. Intramural and extramural lectures are emphasized, and outside rotations included, in the overall residency experience.

The Department of Ophthalmology provides a complete range of services, including primary ophthalmic services as well as tertiary regional referral ophthalmic sub-specialty services which integrate patient care, medical education and research. Beaumont has the largest ophthalmology attending staff in the state of Michigan numbering 130. The Beaumont Eye Institute has provided care for well over 30,000 patient visits each of the last 5 years. Over 8,000 major ophthalmic surgical procedures, and 3,200 refractive surgical procedures are performed on the Royal Oak campus annually.
